Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore power into Nike US Open of Surfing semi-finals
Australian sensation Sally Fitzgibbons and Hawaiian phenom Carissa Moore secured their place in the semi-finals at the Nike US Open of Surfing, the final stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, after claiming
top honours in their respective quarter-finals that went down at Huntington Beach in California, America, on Friday, August 3.
Fitzgibbons got the better of Hawaii’s Coco Ho in the third Quarter-final to make their place into the next stage of the competition, while sending the latter out of the contention from the event title.
The fourth Quarter-final saw New Zealand’s Paige Hareb bow out to Moore, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending her Hawaiian rival into the semi-finals.
The surfing conditions at the primary event site turned out to be pretty solid, presenting an ideal canvas for the top female surfers of the world to treat the huge crowd in attendance to a series of memorable performances.
The third Quarter-final saw Fitzgibbons, current No.2 on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, continue to display a formidable form. She may have missed out on the World Title for yet another year, but that did not deter her determination to steal
the show with exquisite performances.
Pitted against Ho in a battle for the semi-finals, the Australian surfer wasted very little time to assert her dominance over her rival. Locking her first business-wave early in the heat, she posted a 7.83 to her account. In the final minutes of the heat,
she registered an impressive 8.77-point wave to reach a heat-total of 16.60 points.
Ho responded with a couple of scores in the five-point range, thus finishing with a heat-total of 10.80 points, thus surrendering the semi-final spot to her rival.
The fourth Quarter-final saw the former ASP Women’s Champion Moore dominate Hareb during what turned out to be a one-sided affair. The Hawaiian surfer went through a series of average scores before earning a 6.60 off her first business-wave and backed it
up with an impressive 8.50-point ride in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 15.10 points.
Hareb failed to put up much of a fight, earning a mere 3.00 and 5.60 off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 8.60 points, thus losing the semi-final place to her rival.
