Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore reach the semi-finals at Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro
The fifth of seven stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, Colgate Plax Girls Rio Pro, saw Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons and Hawaii’s Carissa Moore advance through into the semi-finals after claiming
a comfortable victory in their respective quarter-final heats that went down at Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 11, 2013.
Fitzgibbon secured her place in the semi-finals by downing America’s Lakey Peterson in the first quarter-final, removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The second quarter-final saw Australia’s Laura Enever failing to hold her own against Moore, thus getting forced to surrender victory and consequently the semi-final slot to her rival.
The peaky two-to-three foot waves breaking at the primary event site had set up a nice and exciting stage for an exhilarating battle between the in-form female surfers who had been impressing the crowd and the panel that mattered the most, the judges, with
their skills.
Fitzgibbons, a multiple-time ASP Women’s World Tour runner-up, may not be in the strongest position to take away the crown this year, but that seemed to be the last thing on her mind as he took on Peterson in the first quarter-final.
Getting off to a solid start, the Australian sensation scored an impressive and eventually decisive 7.33 off her first business wave and then went on to back it up with a 6.17-point ride, thus registering a two-wave total of 13.50 points.
Peterson struggled to find her rhythm throughout the course of the battle and eventually had to settle for a heat-total of 8.34 points, which comprised of a 5.67 and 2.67-point ride.
The second quarter-final pitted former ASP Women’s World Champion and clearly in-form Moore against Enever in a bout for a spot in the next stage of the competition.
The Hawaiian surfer pretty much took the contest away with an excellent 8.00-point ride and then went on to back it up with an impressive 7.10-point wave, thus concluding the heat with a two-wave total of 15.10 points.
Enever responded weakly with a heat-total of 10.24 points, which included a 5.67 and 4.57-point ride, thus getting forced to concede victory to her rival.
