Sally Fitzgibbons looking to go back-to-back at TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival – Surfing News
Australian professional surfer Sally Fitzgibbons is looking to go back-to-back at the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro, third of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series, which
is being held at Fitzroy Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand.
The 21-year-old 2011 ASP Women’s World Runner-Up had took home the event tile last year and continued the momentum to grab a couple of more wins through the course of the season to eventually finishing just behind Hawaii’s Carissa Moore in the over-all season
standings.
Exhibiting a formidable form yet again this season, the young Australian sensation is hoping for yet another success at Taranaki.
During an interview with the official ASP World Tour site aspworldtour.com, Fitzgibbons confessed that she loves New Zealand as the location, its people, the waves breaking at the beaches and the mountains are all special.
Coming to New Zealand straight from a splendid win at Bells Beach, Australia, the Australian surfer is looking to keep the momentum going to collect another win.
However, she admitted that the level of competition that she is up against is going to make her climb to success quite difficult as each surfer that she has to face during her heat is a serious threat, perfectly capable of getting the better of her.
“There are no easy heats at this level of competition and everyone is a threat,” Fitzgibbons said. “All you can do is be as prepared as possible and surf to your strengths.”
Even though Fitzgibbons got off to an excellent start at TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival, she succumbed to America’s Lakey Peterson, the same surfer whom she had forced to take a trip into the relegation Round 2, during their Round 3 encounter.
Losing to her American rival in the third heat of the third round on Thursday, Fitzgibbons finds herself pitted against her compatriot Rebecca Woods in a battle for survival and thus the Quarter-final spot in the third heat of Round 4 that will be the first
contest to take place once the competition resumes.
