Sally Fitzgibbons talks about her performance at Roxy Pro Gold Coast – Surfing Year
Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons is pursuing top honours at the opening event of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, Roxy Pro Gold Coast, at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia.
Surfing her last heat on Tuesday, February 28, the 21-year-old Australian sensation had managed to secure her place in the Semi-finals after overcoming Hawaii’s Malia Manuel in the Quarter-finals.
The women’s event is on hold since the Quarter-final battles as the event organisers are waiting for the conditions at the primary event site to improve.
Fitzgibbons was nothing short of impressive during the previous season of women’s elite tour, barely missing out on the ASP World Title and eventually settling for runner-up place.
However, she is being considered as one of the favourites for the biggest honours in female surfing. With the 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour kicking off with an event in Australia, there is immense support for Fitzgibbons at Snapper Rocks.
In an exclusive interview with SURFER Magazine, the Australian surfer spoke about her experience at the latest edition of Roxy Pro Gold Coast so far.
Commenting on the amount of support that she had at the opening event of the 2012 Women’s World Title series, Fitzgibbons said, “There’s so much support for me at this event, it’s been crazy. Roxy made all these “Go Sally” signs and put them everywhere, and people have beach balls and T-shirts with my name on it. I looked in from the water and it’s written up on the side of the hotel. It’s crazy.”
She conceded that Roxy Pro Gold Coast had delivered plenty of thrilling action and surprises during its first four days. According to her, one of the biggest upsets in the competition was the elimination of the 2011 ASP Women’s World Champion Carissa Moore at the hands of Australia 2011 Women’s World Runner-Up Tyler Wright in the Quarter-finals.
Fitzgibbons’ preparation for the latest World Title campaign involved putting in a lot of hours in water until she sustained a wrist injury in Fiji in December. However, the training did not stop there and she began watching the footage of her surfing, changing and adjusting her style to make it more effective.
