Sally Kipyego, Deena Kastor and Dathan Ritzenhein will lineup for the inaugural event of 5 kilometres race at the ING New York City Marathon, regarded as an
International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Gold Label Road Race.
Planned to kick off on the 5th of November, the runners will take the fast road through Manhattan.
Starting from the UN office, the race track will lead the participants towards Midtown.
Then, passing through the 42nd street, the runners will head towards the Central Park where the New York City Marathon shall reach its finale.
The 25-year old Kipyego from Kenya won a silver medal at this year’s IAAF World Championships in Daegu, covering a total distance of 10,000 metres.
While studying at the Texas Tech University, Kipyego excelled at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Her performance was at par with some of the most cherished individual performances in the history of the NCAA championships.
Recently, Kipyego again claimed the second position at the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Fifth Avenue Mile by concluding the race in 4 minutes and 22.6 seconds.
Her time difference from the top finisher of the race, America’s Jenny Simpson, the world title holder of over 1500 metres, was merely three tenth of a second.
The legendary runner, Kastor, holds the U.S marathon record for marking a finish of two hours, nineteen minutes and thirty six seconds in London, back in 2006.
38-year old, Kastor, also bagged her bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Marathon.
Talking about how she perceives the race, Kastor said, “As I continue my focus and training for the Olympic Trials marathon in January, this race will certainly be a ‘dash’ for me, but it’s another way to enjoy marathon week in New York City”.
America’s 5000 metres record holder, Molly Huddle and Magdalena Lewy Boulet, second position holder of the 2008 U.S Marathon Olympic Trials will also be participating in the race.
Ritzenhein, accompanied by Matt Tegenkamp, Lopez Lomong and Ben True will further add to the excitement encompassing the marathon.
