  1. My roommate works at a very posh salon/day spa and believe me, they are pressed to sell you products--that's where they make all their money.  Products are sold at a 50% (at least) markup.  If she doesn't sell a certain percentage ratio of product to her services then she doesn't get her annual raise.  I've used the expensive stuff and the supermarket stuff and I can't tell a difference.  I DO, however, LOVE CHI silk infusion.  If you heat-style your hair a lot (curling iron or flat iron) it's a godsend.  Other than that, I just buy supermarket stuff.  Compare the ingredients on the bottle--they are pretty much identical!

  2. Very much professional products or the way to go, store brands have ingredients that are not at all good for your hair. I don't and won't use anything unless top notch.

  3. I have a couple of friends who do hair professionally. They have both said that buying expensive shampoo isn't really that much different than buying cheaper shampoo (unless you have a scalp condition of some sort). Buying a better quality conditioner is worth it though.

  4. Of course they tell you that! They have to try to make money on products as well as their services. If you don't notice any major problems with your hair's condition then I think you will be fine without the $17 bottle.

  5. it's an old trick, most hairdressers get a commission off of product sales. unless your hair is extremely damaged, store products are just as good, and you can buy alot of formerly salon only products there. i am a hairdresser with mid back lenght colored hair and i use suave.
