Ok so me and my mom have a fishtank (and a cool one at that) and I think I'm ready to take on the responsibility of fish so now i'm faced with the question of should I make a saltwater aquarium or a fresh water aquarium. I want some pretty awesome fish and its a pretty big tank so I want a variety of fish but I just want to make sure that I'd be able to take care of them easily so please can someone give me a tidbit of info about salt water and fresh water aquariums and maybe a opinion on what you'd choose.... THANK YOU!!

  1. If your mom is very experienced and is willing to help you a saltwater tank might be possible. But they are much more difficult than freshwater- and very, very expensive. If you want a really colorful freshwater tank, try cichlids. Do a lot of research before you make a decision so you can be sure that your fish will be compatible and are suitable for your water conditions.

  2. well fresh water tanks are easier, but with salt water tanks you can get cooler fish :)

it's all up to you! Good luck!

  3. I hope the tank is at least 50 gallons , that would be a minimum for saltwater. A saltwater tank, just to set up will cost about 3 times as much as a freshwater one . Saltwater fish are expensive compared to freshwater ones.My best advice is if you want to go saltwater find someone locally that can help you .

  4. Saltwater animals are much more sensitive to water chemistry and care. They have lower tolerances of fluctuating conditions, you can't keep as many in a tank, and the tank will be more expensive in the long run due to the need for salt, stronger filtration, and a greater need for water movement.

If it's your first foray into the hobby, definitely go with freshwater.

  5. Fresh water. You have to learn a lot before a salt water trial!

Also, salt water fish & Equipment is very expensive

  6. definitely fresh water.. and choose hardy fish like gourami, many tetras, plecos, barb, molly, chiclid etc.. single species tank first before you change to community tank.

  7. Congrats!!!!!!

Really it comes down to money

Saltwater for a big tank $1500-3500 bucks to start up.

    Freshwater about $150-500

Saltwater should never be your first tank, once you get going it's not really more work than a freshwater but you need to know alot more and the fish and creatures and corals etc..are 10 times more sensitive to ammonia and any minor problems can easliy kill them. (and there expensive fish at $30-500 bucks each). You have to really keep a diligent effort on maintaining good water.

Freshwater.....Have really nice fish options and you can make it a planted tank with some good knowledge of what plants need first.

Fish need far less babysitting as they are far more resilent to water fluctuations. And for $100 bucks you can fully stock a tank a beautiful tank.

    Good luck!!!
