  1. ya they are pretty high maintenance

  2. a saltwater tank takes more money than a freshwater one, they require salt, more space, hydrometers, powerheads, certain foods and items.you should stick to freshwater if u r a novice.

  3. I never had a saltwater tank; however I did have a freshwater tank. It was my impression (the article included appears to prove me right) that saltwater aquariums requires more maintenance, etc.

Anyway, why don't you start off with a freshwater tank? If you can handle the maintenance with that on a regular, consistent basis ( had mine for about 20 years, then I got tired of it), you could probably try handling a saltwater tank.

    Good luck!

  4. If you set up your tank properly in the begining, you will find in the long run you do less maintenance down the road.

Even water changes are not weekly and depending on the tank, the inhabitants and the cleaning crews, you can go weeks without a water change or cleaning.

It is less work all the way around, saying you start it up properly.

  5. YES, and very expensive.

I recommend reading at least one book cover to cover, and also lurking and reading and learning on forum type websites devoted to reefing and salt water tanks for a month or so before you put a dime forward into this plan.

The more you learn, the more questions you'll have.

Make sure you know just what you want, and how you want to do it, and what it will cost before you get started.

    You'll be glad you did.

This can be a very rewarding hobby, and very addictive, but it can also crash very quickly if you go too fast without enough  understanding of what you're doing.

    Some websites-

  6. look up sealife systems it's a company that specializes in saltwater filters/aquariums

  7. hey, there are several site to go to learn as much as possible id post the one that  I think is the best but dont know if its allowed, anyway, ive got a 55g and its super cool. just read as much and learn as much as possible before you begin, I do a 20g water change once a month, feed my fish and love every minutes of it. best bet is to read, read, and read up on all you can to learn and then dive in... have fun.....good luck from fishwanabe....

  8. Your doing the right thing by researching FIRST.

Sorry I'm no expert at marine tanks.

I just got my freshwater going.

It shouldnt be hard to maintain, no tank is hard to maintain, it's getting it started that's the hard part.

With the proper equipment I should add.. initial investment.. It wont be hard to maintain.

  9. my dad had a slat water tank and it was so hard maitenance that they all died and they r a lot of money
