Salting pasta when it cooks?

It is common to add a little salt to water that will be used for cooking pasta even though the salt will be poured off of the cooked pasta with the excess water. Why is it a good idea to add the salt?

  1. Some say for flavor? my chem teacher told us that it allows higher temperature without boiling over
