  1. Only one or 2 fish, as saltwater fish need more room. Also, if you haven't ever done a freshwater tank, I'd recommend this first. Saltwater tanks are NOT for beginners. The fish can be expensive and you need to know what you're doing. They cost more to maintain as well.

  2. A larger tamk would be easier for a beginner in saltwater.

  3. Keeping saltwater fish is a lot more work and a lot more expensive than you would think. You are probably not going to be able to put more than 1 decent sized fish in there, maybe 2 small fish in the 10 gallon. You can't put in anything like tangs or angels. The only fish you could put in a small tank like that are blennies, gobies, or damsels. Maybe a dwarf lionfish by itself in a 10 gallon, but that's stretching it. Small saltwater tanks are not really worth it unless you are making a mini-reef and you have a lot of experience with saltwater. Another problem is that in a small tank, any little mistakes can be lethal to the fish. Take it from me, I've had a lot of tanks, and I've tried small SW fish only tanks. They were harder to keep fish alive in than any other tank I've had. If I was you, I would keep it freshwater and put 3 or 4 dwarf puffer fish in there with some otoclincus catfish. Go to Dwarfpuffers.com if you want to read more about those.
