Question:

Saltwater fish to add?

I wanna start a saltwater tank in a year or so that is a 20 gallon tank or less and before you type anything i have done all my reasarch but I wanna know what fish to add I know I wanna add a pearly jawfish but what other fish can I put?

  1. If you've done your research then you would know that to achieve the right nitrite/nitrate levels you need a nitrite-fixing critter--i.e. a damselfish of any species.  And pearly jawfish are burrowers, so make sure you have AT LEAST six inches of gravel.  Also, once you have added the damselfish it will take several weeks at least to achieve the right levels.  Also, 20 gallons are difficult to use as saltwater tanks, so it would actually be less challenging and expensive, and undoubtedly more rewarding to go with thirty or larger.  Good luck, and it sounds like you should hit the books just a bit more.  Jawfish are pretty, but there are better choices available for a starter fish.
