Saltwater tanks

Question

I've been wanting a smaller saltwater fish tank for a while but everyone keeps telling me that they're to difficult to keep. What is it that makes them so difficult?

salt levels, ph and ammonnia levels, and just regular maitenance like water changes and cleaning it. if you have live coral and reefs it's even more work in taking care of it.

Only those people who have never had a salt tank will tell you that.  Salt is salt be it 300 gallons or 5.  Same thing.  Just like a 300 fresh vs. a 5 fresh.

They are not that difficult to keep.  However keeping a 5 limits you as to what you can and cannot keep that is all.  Feel free to email with questions

EDIT:  Salt water fish are actually more hearty than fresh water fish, especially to rapidly changing water chemistry and temperatures.  The oceans are not stable and are not a constant temperature with one area varying from 60 degrees to flushes to 80 (have you ever gone swimming in the ocean than you know what I mean)   Salt water fish don't have specifics also since the salinity of the ocean will change as quickly as the temperatures.

Marine animals are more sensitive to water chemistry than freshwater animals. A small change will propogate through a small tank much faster than a large tank. A small change can have disastrous consequences. Even if you correct the problem, you can still have fluctuations as a result of the "cure," and non-stable parameters can be just as bad as having certain pieces of the water chemistry outside of safe boundaries.

Small tanks are best left to people with a lot of experience in maintaining marine water chemistry. For a beginner, I'd never recommend anything less than 40 gallons, and the bigger you can get, the better.
