Salvador Perez agrees to $7 million deal with Kansas City Royals – MLB News
According to a leading sport website, catcher Salvador Perez Diaz has agreed to a five year $7 million contract with Kansas City Royals. The 21-year-old is an extremely talented individual as he has shown glimpses of his talent in the few Major League Baseball seasons he has played. Not only he is agile and athletic, Perez has the ability to perform in pressure situations.
Signing a long term deal with Perez, the Royals will be hoping for a decent return on their investment. The club officially confirmed the deal on Monday. According to sources, both parties had been in negotiations for considerable amount of time. In an interview with a leading sports website, Perez stated that he wants to build a long term career with the Royals. Expressing his delighted after finalising the deal, he further added that he will be looking to play in the Royals for 20 years.
“The first time I laid eyes on Sal, it took me about two days to realize he was special,” said Royals manager Ned Yost, a former big league catcher. “I’ve been in this game a long time. I’ve seen hundreds of catchers come through and I’ve never seen one like him. He’s a very, very rare find."
“You can’t find a catcher that has his athleticism, his ability to play defense at a high premium on a major league level. You’re not going to find a kid who has the ability to swing the bat like he does," he further added.
The catcher is still a fresh face in Major League Baseball. He has produced some great performances since making his debut in August 2010. His phenomenal .331 batting average with eight doubles, two triples, 21 RBI’s and three home runs suggest that he can prove to be an asset for the Royals. The Kansas City coaching staff will be looking to work hard with Perez to bring improvement in his defensive and offensive skills. The upcoming season will be a key one for the striker. If he can live to all the hype, he will have a chance to upgrade his contract through to 2019.
