  1. sanchez beat danny lopez to win the title, and won the rematch 4 months later (his second defence).

super bantam champ wilfredo gomez moved up to try and take sanchez' title.

his last fight was against future great azumah nelson.

i rate him highly............one of the greatest mexican fighters ever, and one of the best 125 pound kings in the history of the division.

we'll never know how great he could've been........how many times he would have defended the title, how many divisions would he have conquered, how many great fighters would he have squared off against (arguello was on the cards).

  2. salvador sanchez won the wbc featherweight from danny ( little red) lopez via ko in 13 on 02/02/80 in phoenix, arizona, his last title defense was 07/22/79 in new york city, new york against azumah nelson via 15 round ko after trailing in points. he was without question one the the five greatest fighters to ever come out of mexico.

  3. A sad, sad story indeed. An auto accident at the age of 23 left us not knowing how gret he could have been.

I saw the fight he had to win the title against Lopez, who was no joke in his own right. What a puncher. I also saw the Nelson fight, that was a battle, the ref stopped it in the 15th when Sanchez just started raining bombs on Nelson.

Even though his life was short, he has to be ranked towards the top of any list of Mexican boxers. In his short time he ruled his weight division.

  4. I cannot do better than Maurice's answer and thumbs up to him for an excellent answer.  Sanchez was a great fighter with a career record of 44-1-1 beating such fighters as Danny Lopez twice, Wilfredo Gomez, and Azumah Nelson.

  5. I agree with Maurice Sanchez is one of my all time fighters that I love and Maurice gave me some info that I had forgotten to only compare Salvador to only the great Mexican fighters is a slap in the face he is one of the greatest fighters who ever lived . When he fought Wilfredo Gomez I bet against Salvador and lost my money he took apart Gomez

  6. he beat danny "little red" lopez. he was undefeated and died in an automobile accident.. he is undoubtedly better than barrera, morales, diego corrales and marquez.. one of mexico's legend.

  7. he beat wilfredo gomez to take the world title and it was gomez who moved up and got smacked down. His last fight was a fifteen round descision win against azumah nelson. I rank him the greatest featherweight in the history of boxing. He is the only person to beat gomez in his prime and gomez made it to the list of the 100 greatest boxers ever. He also dominated his division and won that title by the young age of 23, something very few have done. Sanzhez also made that list being ranked 88. I think he is the greatest and if he didn't die young and fought alexis arguello he would have proven it. No one in the division ever had his chin, punching power, or heart.
