Salvatore Sirigu was not Leonardo’s first option as goalkeeper of PSG - Saint-Etienne owner
Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo had considered Stephane Ruffier as the custodian at the Parc des Princes before signing Salvatore Sirigu from US Palermo, according to latest reports in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899.
PSG spent over 80 million Euros to acquire nine players this summer as Leonardo mustered a squad to win silverware for the Parisian club this season.
In an interview, co-chairman of Les Verts, Bernard Caiazzo, revealed that the Brazilian had indicated his interest in the 24-year-old goalkeeper. Caiazzo revealed that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leonardo-c22056 would have signed Ruffier instead of Sirigu had the Brazilian taken up his position
at PSG earlier. Stade Rennais wanted Ruffier but the Bretons' refusal to pay six million Euros for the Frenchman meant that the French custodian was sold to the club Stephanois.
However, Stephane Ruffier wasn’t short of options and chose to join AS Saint-Etienne from AS Monaco instead. The Frenchman was one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1 last season despite Monaco’s relegation to Ligue 2 football.
The co-chairman at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard further added that ASSE’s main objective in the transfer window was to reduce the burden on the payroll of the Stéphanois. Les Verts were successful to some extent as they were able to generate an estimated amount
of 26 million Euros from the transfer window and recruited players with less salary.
The sporting director of PSG might be pleased with his decision as the former Palermo goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 international has been the author of some terrific saves in Ligue 1 this season. Although
he has not yet managed to keep a clean sheet, the 24-year-old goalkeeper has definitely made an impact on PSG coach Antoine Kombouare.
The Kanak coach has preferred the Nuoro native over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Douchez-c27810, who was signed from Stade Rennais in the early stages of the transfer window. Though Douchez is not happy at being relegated to the bench, the Frenchman might have to wait patiently for
his chance as Sirigu’s form has made him indispensable to Kombouare’s plans.
Paris Saint-Germain take on Stade Brestois 29 in Week 5 of the 2011/12 Ligue 1 Championelle and Sirigu is once again expected to wear the gloves for Leonardo’s side.
