Salzburg coach Ricardo Moniz bemoans referee’s performance in match against Athletic Bilbao
In the aftermath of Athletic Bilbao vs. Red Bull Salzburg match, Ricardo Moniz has lamented the performance of the referee.
Croatian referee, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ivan-c17215 Bebek, awarded two controversial penalties to Athletic in the space of six minutes, which clearly annoyed the Salzburg coach.
The penalties were duly converted by Spanish international http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Llorente-c13671, and allowed Athletic back into the tie, being two goals down.
Ricardo Moniz, said that the performance of the referee has been "catastrophic" and added that he is "very disappointed" with the end result.
"No excuses, but I think we deserved the three points. The two penalties were not fair.”
“I do not know what happened to the referee, I do not know if he was asleep, although it is better to say nothing. I know I have to live with these decisions, but it was a great disappointment," the dejected Austrian team coach stated.
Although, Moniz was disappointed with the final result, he was happy with the performance of his players in San Mames.
He praised their offensive and defensive display, claiming it to be “fantastic” in the first half.
"In defence we were very disciplined and compact, we created two or three times and scored twice. We had the ambition to do well here and we did. I see the positives of the team, but I'm very disappointed because we had the chance to win," the Dutch coach
said.
With Moniz clearly annoyed with the refereeing decisions that affected the final result of the match, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marcelo-c23554 Bielsa declined to comment.
The experienced Argentine coach understood the feelings of his opposition number, but declined to reaffirm his stance.
He said he had his own views on the match, and they differed from Moniz. However, he did assert that even though he was happy with the result, a victory for the team would have justified their performance on the night.
Athletic hogged possession in the encounter, but failed to reflect them in the final result. The manager bemoaned lack of creativity in the final third as a plausible reason.
The result takes the Basque team top of UEFA Europa League Group F. Paris Saint Germain lie in second, while Salzburg trail in third position. Slovakian team, Slovan Bratislava is at the bottom with one point from three matches.
