Sam Allardyce explains his comments about being too good for Rovers
Sam Allardyce, the Blackburn Rovers manager has been in the news lately not for the performance of his team, but instead for some comments he has been making in the press. Yesterday there was this spat between him and Arsenal manager
Arsene Wenger about who is better, and now he has been made to explain his comments that he made last week about being too good for Rovers. Allardyce in a statement said that his comments should not be taken literally as they were just "tongue-in-cheek."
The 55 year old had said that he was "not suited" for the job at Blackburn or even for his previous job at Bolton. He said that limited resources at such clubs meant that success was never guaranteed and if he had put the same
amount of effort while being a manager of a big club he would have got a lot more success. He went on to say that had he been in charge of a club like Manchester United, Real Madrid, Chelsea or Inter Milan, he would be able to win doubles or at least league
titles every year.
The former Bolton manager has now said that he was just making conversation, and by no means had he meant for those words to be taken seriously. Allardyce said that he is totally committed to his job at Blackburn and is looking
forward to the season and working hard to get his team some success.
"I didn't think it would create quite as big a stir as it has done," Allardyce said.
"It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. Somebody asked me if I had found my level and was comfortable as manager at Blackburn Rovers.
The Rovers Boss said that he is someone who has always strived to get better at what he does. He added that there is no point in staying static in any profession. Allardyce who is touted as the man to replace Fabio Capello as England
manager said that there is no harm in having ambitions in life, and that is all he wants. He went on to say that getting to the top is what he wants and if he does get to manage such big clubs he has no doubts that he would be able to win silverware. Big Sam
added that one can never go to the top without working hard at the bottom, and that is exactly what he has been doing. He reiterated that he is totally committed to the job at Rovers and has all his energies focused on the team’s success.
Allardyce said: "I'm never comfortable as a manager because I am always looking to improve, and my terms of wanting to improve is about having a burning ambition to always get better than I am.
"Obviously, in the end, that would always be to try and get to the very, very top of the industry that I am working in."
The manager who is obviously very ambitious said that, the most important thing is to believe in his own ability and that is what he does. He said that Blackburn has always been a team with great potential but has underachieved.
While commenting on the former Blackburn manager Mark Hughes he said that Hughes had done a fantastic job with the club. With such limited resources he had built a strong and competitive team, but when the time came to take the next step he left the club.
Allardyce said that if Hughes had stayed for another season or two, Rovers would have progressed dramatically. However he said there is still immense potential and he will make sure that he gets the best out of his team.
He added: "I believe in my own ability, that is the bottom line. At the moment it is with Blackburn Rovers, which I am very pleased about."
