Sam Baird outplays Alfred Burden in Qualifiers Round 2 of 2011 World Snooker Championship
The 22-year-old English professional, Sam Baird, continues his journey to the last 16 as he has also beaten the experienced Alfred Burden by a frame score of 10-7 in the qualifiers round 2 of the 2011 World Snooker Championship at the English Institute of
Sports in Sheffield.
The teenager, Sam Baird, has put some shock on the cards. He started from the pulmonary stage one of round 1 and has dominated all five matches as of yet.
On the same note, Alfred Burden, who in the 2006-07 season qualified for the China Open and also won the IBSF World Snooker Championship in November 2009 in Hyderabad, India, has crashed in round 2.
Baird, who entered the professional tour in the 2009-10 season, by winning the EBSA Pro-Ticket Tour playoffs, came up against Burden after beating the likes of Colin Mitchell, Neal Selman, Reanne Evans, and T’.T’ boon with frame scores of 5-1, 3-5, 6-10,
and 8-10 respectively.
It was a good play by both players and the overall score line was 68-13, 90-5, 32-65, 26-68, 1-71, 31-103, 14-120, 31-75, 45-69, 70-48, 59-58, 20-104, 20-65, 92-14, 63-39, 91-0, and 4-69.
Burden took a flying start by storming into the opening two frames with dominant breaks of 37 and 48 to lead by 2-0 before Baird took the third and fourth playing tactically to level the things by 2-2 before the interval.
After the interval it was again Baird who this time completely dominated the frames until the evening session break. He took all five frames straight in which he also produced two carving century breaks of 103 and 120 as well.
In the evening session, Burden clawed back and pocketed the first two frames to reduce his opponents lead by 7-4. However, Baird again went ahead by taking the next two with a classy break of 86 in the 12th and a couple of quick breaks of 36 and
28 in the 13th.
Baird was now only in need of one frame to reach the finish line when Burden bounced back once again to take three frames straight. He took the cagey 14th and 15th before making an outclass break of 91 in 16th.
First chance in the 17th frame fell for Burden again but this time he after rolling in 3 points lost his nerve and gave away a chance. Baird, who needed one frame, responded with a superb break of 69 to seal his victory by 10-7.
Sam Baird is now only two rounds away from reaching the last 16 and will face Mike Dunn in the round 3. Let’s see if the newcomer goes through in his first attempt.
