Sam Bewley to join Team GreenEdge after the London Olympics 2012
Sam Bewley is looking forward to an upbeat season as the cyclist will represent his nation at the London Olympics. He will pursue the gold medal at the track event and is also hopeful to find a place in GreenEdge’s roster for the 2012 season.
Bewley was left team-less after the big merger of RadioShack and Leopard Trek. It is believed that Shayne Bannan of Team GreenEdge was interested to sign him up.
Bannan confirmed that Sam will fill the Australian team’s roster after Robbie McEwen’s retirement.
Robbie will retire from professional cycling in May, after participating in the Tour of California, as announced earlier.
He will continue his association with the sport and is looking forward to working as a tactical advisor with Team GreenEdge.
Sam spent the 2009 season with Trek-Livestrong Team and finally made his way through to RadioShack in 2010.
While commenting about his chances with the Australian team, he mentioned that discussions with the team were in progress but there is nothing final as of now.
He briefed, "Honestly I can't say too much, I don't think it's my place. It's going to be a good team for sure. It's going to be a team that gets results straight away. It looks like a good outfit".
The Kiwi commented on the time spent with his previous team, RadioShack, and stated that he was supported by his old teammates and cyclists during the early stages of his career.
He explained, "I struggled through the early part of my time with them but I learnt so much. The directors and other riders on the team were really, really helpful".
The 24-year-old’s main goal for the season ahead is the London Olympics and he is keen to make an impact during his last year on the track.
He won the bronze medal in Team Pursuit during the Beijing Olympics 2008.
Bewley is a young prospect in cycling and it will be an exciting experience to see him ride the road race in 2012. He will ride along Stuart O’ Grady, Pieter Weening, Simon Gerrans, Baden Cooke and Matt Goss after Robbie McEwen’s retirement from the side.
