Sam Mcconnell and Marieke Guehrer impress in Melbourne: 2011 Australian University Games
Sam Mcconnell of University of Sydney and Marieke Guehrer of University of Melbourne stunned Gold Coast’s crowd on day one of the 2011 Australian University Games, on Tuesday, September 27. The final session conducted both the Men’s and Women’s 100m butterfly
events.
Mcconnell of University of Sydney powered the finishing wall with an impressive mark of 55.46 seconds to retain the golden crown. On the other hand, Shane Kingsbury of University of New South Wales took home the silver title on the podium with a sterling
mark of 56.38 seconds. In the corresponding meet, Grant Irvine of Queensland University of Technology settled for third in 58.10 seconds.
Matthew Spence of University of New South Wales wound up fourth in 59.57 seconds, whereas, Stephen Parkes of University of Sydney settled for fifth spot in a time of 59.72 seconds. Moreover, Tim Halliday of University of Sydney earned sixth position in 1
minute and 01.09 seconds and Alexander Bouris of University of Western Sydney earned seventh spot in 1 minute and 01.35 seconds. Ernest Lourens of University of South Australia settled for eighth position in 1 minute and 01.48 seconds.
On the other hand, University of Melbourne’s athlete, Marieke Guehrer won Women’s 100m butterfly title with a fastest mark of 1 minute and 02.35 seconds. Emma Gray of University of Sydney settled for silver in 1 minute and 03.68 seconds, while Ashleigh Mccleery
of Griffith University claimed bronze medal in 1 minute and 04.53 seconds. Katrina Schieber of University of Queensland earned fourth position in 1 minute and 06.24 seconds, while Mel Houghton of University of Sydney settled fifth in 1 minute and 08.64 seconds.
In the corresponding splash, Jessica Morrison of University of Melbourne and Medeleine Hunnik Van of Queensland University of Technology was placed sixth and seventh with a mark of 1 minute and 08.90 seconds and 1 minute and 09.16 seconds, respectively.
Last, but not the least, eight position went to Sim Su Lim of Flinders University with a time of 1 minute and 10.35 seconds.
Earlier in the day, Jade Neilsen of Bond University topped Women’s 200m freestyle race with a sterling mark of 2 minutes and 03.46 seconds. Madeleine Hunnik Van of Queensland University of Technology and Jessica Morrison of University Melbourne earned silver
and bronze medals with a time of 2 minutes and 07.21 seconds and 2 minutes and 07.37 seconds, respectively.
