Sam Michael admits Rubens Barrichello heading Williams in right direction after Monaco – Formula 1
Williams’ technical director Sam Michael has admitted that the team driver Rubens Barrichello is heading his squad in the right direction with his good progress in the recently held Monaco Grand Prix.
The driver had a trouble-free race weekend at the Monte Carlo street track. He finished his run in the ninth spot after a disappointing start to the 2011 Formula 1 season. However, Williams were quite happy with their driver’s best performance on the grid
in the ongoing season.
The technical director also mentioned that the two points of the team will encourage the drivers to score more points in the remainder of the season.
He added, “Rubens, as well, was perhaps looking good for an even better result, but the first safety car came out and damaged his position significantly; you can see this from the number of cars that were running behind him that ended up in the top five
after the safety car.”
Michael further added that the Monaco race weekend was a ‘lottery’ for Williams in terms of getting points in the end.
Apart from that, Michael praised the two engineers, Xevi Pujolar and Andrew Murdoch’s work which they did on the FW33 car. He said that they did a very great job over the weekend and made good strategic decisions.
Williams’ Rubens Barrichello admitted that the role of the car was very supportive for him at the Monaco GP. After a positive race day, he said it felt good to have a good result for the whole team.
Michael further discussed the race weekend and mentioned, “The wear life wasn't as strong as we had predicted from practice, but it was still good. It would have been marginal for a one-stop without the safety cars, so it looks like a two stop strategy was
optimum.”
On the other hand, the team was also disappointed with their other driver Pastor Maldonado’s accident during the closing laps of the race.
After a successful race in Monaco, Williams are hoping for a stronger race from Barrichello in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix which is scheduled to take place on June 12, 2011.
