Sam Michael defends their driver Sergio Perez’s aggressive driving in Monaco – Formula 1 news
McLaren sporting director, Sam Michael has defended their driver Sergio Perez who faced immense criticism over his aggressive driving style in the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix.
Perez performed convincingly well in the qualifying at Circuit de Monaco and managed to secure 7th grid slot. Later, he showed some remarkable moves in the race and was fighting for fifth place finish during the ending laps.
However, unfortunately he had a collision with Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus because of which he had to move back to the pit and remained unable to score any point. On the other hand, the Finn could only secure 10th place finish due to the collision.
After the race, Raikkonen criticised the Mexican driver a lot and said that he should be punched in the face. However, Michael has shown full support for the 23-year-old and stated that he was only trying to attain good results like any other driver in the
field.
“Ultimately he's a racing driver and he's just racing,” Michael said. “All the moves that he did are all moves that have been done by all of those drivers at various points in their careers; some recently and some long ago. The overtaking opportunities that
are available at chicane at Monaco are ones that have been used for long time before Checo Perez was even born, so for him to apply that as something new is not the case, and ultimately he's racing for his position.”
Besides, he said that the veteran driver is developing himself and has got the potential to achieve more in the future.
“He's establishing himself and races that he's doing all those other drivers have done themselves; that's F1,” he added.
Presently, Perez is standing at 12th place in the drivers’ championship with 12 points. Additionally, he is behind Adrian Sutil of Force India and is ahead of Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso. In contrast, his teammate, Jenson Button is at 10th position in
the drivers’ standings with 25 points.
It will be exciting to see how both the drivers perform in the Canadian GP which is going to be held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on June 9, 2013.
