Sam Michael talks of changes in Williams’ team Management and car – Formula 1 news
Williams’ technical director, Sam Michael has stated that after having a miserable performance in the opening round of 2011 Formula 1 season, plenty of changes in the team will be seen.
Sam said that the car’s aerodynamic and brake duct will be modified whereas some personnel will be shuffled in the team, including him.
Williams’ performance in the opening three races of the season is not a great one as both drivers, Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado, are yet to score a point for the team. Sam stated that the car will be modified before the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix.
“For Turkey we will have a new front wing, rear wing, brake ducts and three or four other things as well,” Sam said. He added that the Chinese Grand Prix result was not a complete disaster because both Williams’ cars made it to the chequered flag.
Sam cited the example of the McLaren team and their performance in the pre-season testing sessions and commented, “Things can change very quickly in this sport.” He further added that with new rules and Pirelli tyres, F1 is becoming more unpredictable.”
Talking about the changes in the team, Sam clearly stated that the performance is not what was expected and it all comes down to the development team.
“I have chosen the technical team that works for me – the aero team, the design team, the operations group, the vehicle dynamics and the KERS guys. They are all people that I have chosen, so if it doesn't work then it is my responsibility,” commented Sam.
He further commented that his contract with the Williams team is until 2011 and he will do his best to at least make them a mid-field car.
Talking about the chances of the Williams’ team in the remaining races of the 2011 season, Sam stated that Red Bull and McLaren team are not the target and even Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault cannot be pursued realistically keeping in mind the car and their
budget.
Sam commented that finishing fifth in the constructors’ championship will be good for the team.
