Sam Querrey bounces over Yen-Hsun Lu to reach round two – US Open 2012
Seeded 27th at his home Grand Slam event, Sam Querrey made a comeback victory to oust Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu in four sets at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Tuesday. He summed up a 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 victory against the Taiwanese veteran
to labour into the second round at this major hard court event taking place in Corona Park in Queens, New York City.
The local seed, who is coming off from a semi-final showing at the Winston-Salem Open, displayed impressive skills to outclass Lu in just over three hours. He improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series
against the world number 64 and comfortably advanced into the second round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Querrey stated in a press conference after triumphing over Lu:
"Lu is a tough player. Hits the ball low and flat. It's tough for me because I'm a taller guy, I like it up a little higher. I didn't play my best out there, but I just stuck with it so I'm happy to move on."
The 29-year-old made a strong entry at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. He drew the first blood in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Lu lost his edge in the eighth game but held his composure and took the set to a tie-breaker. The Taiwanese dominated
in it before closing out the opener with a 7-6(4) success.
Ranked 28th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey re-focused in the following set. He cashed in the lone break chance in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. The American held his entire serves without facing any barrier
and clicked the set with 6-4 win.
Querrey lifted his game in the following set and after capitalising on two break opportunities, he cruised to a 5-1 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the eighth game, the American held his serve once again and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
The 24-year-old held his composure in the fourth set and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. He swiped his entire serves without facing any breakpoint and got the breakthrough in the 11th game, eventually sealing the set by winning
seven games to five.
Next up for Querrey is Spanish contender, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, who battled past India’s Somdev Devvarman in a four set thriller to set up this clash.
