Sam Querrey cruises past Amer Delic into quarterfinal – Tiburon Challenger 2011
Third seeded American, Sam Querrey, came head to head with Bosnian, Amer Delic, in the second round of Tiburon Challenger Tournament, played in California, USA, on October 13th. The fifth meeting between the two players
ended up with the American taking the glory in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. The resistance from Delic lasted for an hour and ten minutes, however, he wasn’t able to make an impact.
The result was inevitable considering the latest run of form of both players. The American has been enjoying a very good time on the courts, winning seven of his last nine encounters whereas Delic was going through a rough time
losing five of his last nine matches. Four matches were played between these two players in the past and the head-to-head result of 3-1 also favoured the third seeded American.
Poor form, disappointing head-to-head score and the pressure of match against the seeded player on the latter’s home ground makes it extremely difficult for a player to portray his best of game plays, just like Delic.
The first set was well poised at the score of 4-4 before the third seed broke his opponents serve in the ninth game of the set and then capitalized on the advantage to take the last game and seal the first set. Both players did
showed their ability in the form of aces as Querrey scored four whilst Delic scored two of them.
Querrey won 36 points compared to 30 of his opponent and managed to register a massive 94% first serve point winning rate. He was disappointing on his second serve as he just managed to secure 43% of the points from them.
The Bosnian maintained a respectable rate in first and second serves with a winning rate of 64% and 54% respectively. The only time he lapsed his concentration was in the ninth game of the set where he couldn’t capitalized on his
serve and lost the game to his opponent which piled up to his loss in the first set.
Trailing by one set, Delic started the set in despair and didn’t look to threaten the third seed at any stage of the set. He only managed to win two games in the second set hitting two aces and converting only one breakpoint opportunity
to his advantage.
Querrey continued his domination in the first-serve, winning nine out of twelve allotted points. He broke his opponent’s serve thrice and this was couple with four aces that were good enough to defeat the Bosnian International.
He will now face his fellow American, Alex Kuznetsov in the next round of the tournament.
