Sam Querrey crushes Ricardas Berankis to re-live his dream – Farmers Classic 2012
Second seeded Sam Querrey devastated the first-time finalist, Ricardas Berankis, with a bagel at the Farmers Classic 2012 on Sunday. He jolted down a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the Lithuanian qualifier to capture his third title at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event taking place in Los Angeles, California.
The local seed displayed top class skills to outshine Berankis in their first encounter at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in the campus of UCLA. After reeling off the opening nine games in a row, Querrey not only carved out a straight set victory in 51 minutes but also bagged his seventh career title.
“I feel like I always play well here,” the delighted American was quoted in a post-match interview. “I grew up kind of playing around this area and I’m really comfortable out there on the courts. It’s fun to play in front of my friends and family. It all came together this week, and especially today.”
The 24-year-old high-spiritedly entered the Los Angeles Tennis Center. He went on a six-game killing spree and pulled out the opener with a bagel. He was never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed in three out of four break chances to inch towards the fame.
Ranked 38th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey kept momentum rolling in the following game and earned the coveted break in the second game to go 3-0 up. He held his remaining serves with poise and capitalised on another break chance in the last game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to two.
Querrey is eyeing to carry his rhythm in the next tournament he enters, Citi Open in Washington D.C. He further stated:
“I’m hoping I can just keep this up and play well the entire summer and keep going. I’ve got Washington D.C. next week, so I’m just trying to continue to ride the train and hopefully play well all the way through the US Open.”
The 22-year-old on the other hand became the first Lithuanian-born tennis star to reach an ATP tour-level final. He displayed brilliant abilities throughout the tournament but came under pressure in this final showdown. Berankis clobbered a lower first serve share of 45 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 61 per cent and marked only nine out of 18 points on it. He also squandered all three break chances and dusted away only two out of seven breakpoints he faced.
