Sam Querrey ousts Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in second round – US Open 2012
Seeded 27th in this event, Sam Querrey, tumbled the Spanish challenger, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, in straight sets at the US Open 2012 on Thursday. He penned down a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory against the Spanish veteran to cruise into the third round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Corona Park, Queens.
The local seed remained focused throughout the match to earn the glory in one hour and 49 minutes at this major hard court event. The contenders previously fought each other at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships three years ago and after stealing the spotlight, Querrey improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against the world number 94.
"I played great today," said the beaming American in a courtside interview after bagging the match. "I served well. Didn't face a breakpoint. I was really aggressive on my forehand. Really went for it. Really just felt really good and confident the whole time."
Querrey made a convincing entry at the Grandstand stadium and held his opening serve to take the initial lead. He smoothly swiped his entire serves without facing any real challenge and got the breakthrough in the sixth game to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 28th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey maintained his intensity in the follow-up set. He quickly bagged his entire serves without facing any breakpoint. The American required a single break of serve in the fifth game to click the set with a 6-4 win.
The 24-year-old carried his rhythm in the third set. He got the coveted break in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Querrey then kept his remaining serves without encountering any trouble and cashed in another break chance in the last game, sealing the set by winning six games to three.
Querrey will face off the sixth seed, Tomas Berdych from Czech Republic. The Czech number one trounced Estonia's Jurgen Zopp in straight sets to progress at this last of the four Grand Slam events.
