Sam Querrey overpowers Alejandro Falla in round one – Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012
Local wild card entrant, Sam Querrey, hit back from a set down to outclass the Colombian star, Alejandro Falla, in a three set thriller at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 on Tuesday. He formulated a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the world number
60 to book a spot in the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event taking place in Memphis, United States.
Crowd favourite, Querrey, found his rhythm in the second set and then maintained consistency in his game to tumble over the Colombian in their third meeting. After earning success in this one hour and 42-minutes battle, the American not only took lead in
the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 2-1 against Falla but also advanced into the round of 16 at this hard court tournament.
"I feel pretty close," the booming American was quoted in a post-match conference. "I'm missing more forehands than I usually do, but I'm just committed to stepping up and hitting it. More and more are falling [in] every day."
The 28-year-old assertively entered the Racquet Club of Memphis and held entire serves without facing any barrier. He capitalised on two out of three break chances and pulled out the opener by winning six games to two.
Ranked 99th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey turned the tables around in the second set. The American dusted away the only breakpoint he came across and cashed in one out of three break opportunities to seal the equaliser
with a 6-3 win.
The 24-year-old kept momentum rolling into the final set. He lost his serve once but converted both break chances to his advantage, subsequently conquering the decider with a 6-4 score line.
Next up for the wild card entrant is the winner of the match between his qualifying compatriot, Robby Ginepri, and the seventh seed, Kevin Anderson.
Top seeded John Isner will assist Querrey in the next round. He stomped over the Luxembourgian contestant, Gilles Muller, for the third straight time.
"Even though I beat Roger [Federer], it was just one match," top seed commented. "I think confidence comes from putting a string of match [wins] together. I haven't really played that many matches. This was just my seventh match of the year."
The world number 13 will square off against his fellow citizen, Donald Young, who battled past Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in three sets to set-up this date.
