Sam Querrey plonks Jurgen Melzer to reach round two – Rogers Cup 2012
American star, Sam Querrey, got the better of the Austrian top ranked contestant, Jurgen Melzer, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Tuesday. He penned down a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the world number 36 to progress into the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Toronto, Canada.
Querrey stayed on track to grab his eighth career title at this outdoor hard court tournament taking place from 4th to 12th August after triumphing over the left-handed Austrian. He is also the leading star at the Emirates Airline US Open Series Bonus Challenge Standings after conquering the Farmers Classic (downed Ricardas Berankis in final) and secure a semi-final berth at the Citi Open in Washington D.C (lost to Alexandr Dolgopolov).
Ranked 35th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Querrey stepped into the Rexall Centre with conviction. He got the critical break in the second game and easily jumped to a 3-0 lead. The American then held his remaining serves without facing any real challenge and sealed the opener by winning six games to three.
The 24-year-old kept momentum rolling in the follow-up set. He unleashed barrage of groundstrokes to reel off the opening four games before Melzer could hold on. The American held his remaining serves after blocking the lone breakpoint he faced and eventually clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
All in all, Querrey fired 11 aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 60 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 49 per cent to steal the spotlight. He also magnificently clicked 24 out of 28 points on it and ultimately bagged the match in just under an hour.
Up next for Querrey is the Japanese number one, Kei Nishikori. Being 13th seed at this tournament, the Japanese received a first round bye.
The Italian qualifier, Fabio Fognini, also dominated in his match against Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu. He summed up a 7-6(7), 5-7, 7-6(5) victory in almost three hours to advance at this event.
He will next face 12th seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber in the round of 32.
