Sam Querrey plonks Kei Nishikori in second round – Rogers Cup 2012
American rising star, Sam Querrey, stunned the 13th seed, Kei Nishikori, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Asian number one to charge into the second round at this outdoor hard court event held in Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada.
Querrey is currently leading the Emirates Airline US Open Series Bonus challenge standing after clinching the title in Los Angeles and securing a final four berth at the Citi Open in Washington D.C. He carried his winning ways at this event and easily carved out the victory in one hour and 11 minutes against the world number 17. The American not only improved to a 2-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against Nishikori but also advanced into the third round.
The ultra-fit American showed amazing defensive skills at this ATP Masters 1000 event. After the Japanese held his serve in the fourth game, Querrey reeled off the last four games in a row and sealed the opener by winning six games to two. He superbly warded off all seven breakpoints he faced and cashed in two out of four break chances to inch towards the glory.
Ranked 35th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey maintained his intensity in the following set. He quickly bagged the opening three games consecutively after getting the critical break in the second game. The American plucked his remaining serves with poise and eventually pulled out the victory with a 6-3 score line.
All in all, the American fired 12 aces to prevail in this battle. He jolted down a lower first serve share of 50 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 58 per cent but tremendously availed 29 out of 33 points on it.
Next up for Querrey is the defending champion and the top seed, Novak Djokovic. The Serbian ace tumbled the Australian top, Bernard Tomic, with a similar score of 6-2, 6-3 in another court. He broke the teenager’s serve three times to carve out the victory in one hour and 11 minute.
