Sam Querrey sails past Fritz Wolmarans into second round – Tiburon Challenger 2011
Third seeded American, Sam Querrey was tied with Fritz Wolmarans of Russia in the first round of Tiburon Challenger, played in California, USA on October 12th. The Russian was outclassed by Querrey in straight sets with
a score of 6-4, 6-4. The first meeting between the two contestants ended up in a one-sided match that helped the American to move to next round with an easy victory over the Russian.
Wolmarans’ dreams were crushed by the third seed 24-year-old, Querrey. Sizeable crowd gathered up to support their local hero, Sam Querrey.
First set kicked-off as expected and American took the lead of three games at the start but then Russian bounced back into the match and clinched the next two games and made the match a little bit interesting. The slight lapse
of concentration didn’t cost the third seed much and he took the first set with an overall score of 6-4. American struck four aces and broke his opponents serve once which was good enough to place the Russian International on the back-foot and take the first-set
lead. Russian tried his best to resist the third seed from taking the set but he lost it by the difference of just one point. The only memorable highlight for the Russian came in the fifth game of the set when he aced the American for the first and only time
in the set.
Second set was the carbon copy of the first set. Russian couldn’t handle the pressure of the big game and did quite a few unforced errors which lead to his downfall. His aptitude for the game was right but his luck was out. He
missed out on some of the easiest of the points due to his lapse of concentration and hence ended up losing the second set with the same score line. Five aces, three from American and two from Russian, were the highlights of the second-set. Querrey won the
crucial break point to finish the game. Russian faced another early exit in the tournament.
Querrey will go head to head with Amer Delic of Bosnia in the second round of the tournament. Querrey has an advantage of playing at home in front of his own crowd and is expected to sail past the Bosnian into the quarterfinals.
