Sam Querrey trounces Benjamin Becker to reach quarters – Citi Open 2012
Eighth seed Sam Querrey downed the German veteran, Benjamin Becker, in straight sets at the Citi Open on Thursday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-3 victory against the 31-year-old to power into the final eight at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event held
in Washington D.C., United States.
The local seed remained dominant throughout the match, eventually sealing the deal in one hour and 17 minutes. Fighting each other for the first time, Querrey not only took lead in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by
1-0 against the German but also secured a spot in the quarter-finals at this outdoor hard court tournament.
“I feel really good. I’ve won six matches in a row, so anytime you can do that, you’re feeling good,” said the beaming American after clinching the match. “Anytime you win a tournament, you’re feeling good, and I played great last week and so far it’s continued
over to this week.”
Querrey high-spiritedly entered the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. He got the critical break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the fifth game, the American stayed calm and swiped his remaining serves. He got
the breakthrough in the last game and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win.
Ranked 38th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey maintained his intensity in the following set and reeled off the opening three games successively with a break of serve. He kept his remaining serves without facing any
barrier and sealed the set by winning six games to three.
Summing up the 24-year-old performance at this ATP World Tour 500 series match, Querrey sought 11 break chances and converted three to his advantage. He also hammered nine aces and finished the match with 67 points.
Next challenge for Querrey is the third seed, Kevin Anderson, who stomped over French qualifier, Florent Serra, in straight sets to set up this match.
The South African number one hammered 12 aces to formulate a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Serra. He clobbered a lower first serve share but capitalised on three out of seven break chances to rule the match.
