Sam Querrey trounces Feliciano Lopez to enter round two – Valencia Open 2012
Sam Querrey form United States stomped over the local challenger, Feliciano Lopez, in straight sets at the Valencia Open 2012 on Tuesday. He juggled up a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory against the former Top 15 to progress into the second round at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències in Valencia, Spain.
The American contender showed brilliant tennis to outrun Lopez in their fifth meeting. After registering success in one hour and 20 minutes, Querrey not only avenged his loss at the China Open few weeks ago but also lowered trail in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 2-3 against the left-handed Spaniard.
Querrey made a convincing entry at this ATP World Tour 500 Series event taking place from 20th to 28th October. He got the critical break in the sixth game and jumped to a 5-2 lead. The American held his serve once more and clinched the opener with a 6-3 score line. He blocked the lone breakpoint he came across and converted one out of two break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 23rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He swiftly bagged his entire serves without encountering any hindrance. The American failed to seek any break opportunity but outclassed his opponent in the tie-breaker, eventually sealing the set with a 7-6(4) win.
All in all, the American struck 13 aces and ended the battle with 72 points. He produced a lower first serve share of 58 per cent as compared to his rival’s 63 per cent but brilliantly availed 34 out of 42 points on it.
Querrey will face off the sixth seed, Nicolas Almagro, in the proceeding round. He triumphed over his wild card compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrer, who was playing his last career match. Almagro outmuscled the former world number one in straight sets to set up this meeting. He was broken three times but cashed five out of eight break chances to formulate a 7-5, 6-3 victory. The younger Spaniard struck 12 aces and availed 31 out of 40 points on his first serve share to prevail.
