Sam Querrey trounces Igor Sijsling in round two – Farmers Classic 2012
Second seed, Sam Querrey, got the better of the Dutch competitor, Igor Sijsling, in straight sets at the Farmers Classic 2012 on Wednesday. He juggled up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the world number 102 to secure a spot in the last eight at this Emirates
Airline US Open series event held in the campus of UCLA, California.
The local star, Querrey, broke his opponent’s serve four times to carve out the victory in their first encounter. Battling each other for the first time, the American not only edged in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series
by 1-0 against Sijsling but also powered into the quarter-finals at this outdoor hard court tournament.
Querrey, who returned to the Los Angeles Tennis Center after two years, stated in a press conference:
"I feel great, I wasn't here a year ago but everything is 100 percent now. I've been feeling great on the practise court and I'm playing well. I feel like I'm getting back to where I was a year and a half ago. This was a great start to the week for me. I
have my confidence back and I'm having a great time. I'm looking forward to a good summer on the hard courts."
The 24-year-old made a powerful entry at this ATP World Tour 250 series event. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. Querrey held his remaining serves with conviction and cashed in another break chance in the last game to click
the opener with a 6-2 win.
Ranked 57th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey maintained his intensity in the following set. After Sijsling held his serve in the fourth game, the American hammered massive forehands to reel off the last four games
in a row.
All in all, Querrey fired nine aces and was never threatened with any breakpoint. He capitalised on four out of nine break chances and sealed the match with 60 points. The American also clobbered a better first serve share of 61 per cent in contrast with
his rival’s 58 per cent and brilliantly availed 23 out of 27 points on it.
Next in line for Querrey is the conqueror of the match between Belgium’s Xavier Malisse and the Australian contestant, Matthew Ebden.
The third seed, Leonardo Mayer, will accompany the American in the following round. He recorded a 6-0, 4-0 retirement victory against Italy’s Flavio Cipolla.
