Sam Querrey wins opening round against Dustin Brown at Delray Beach Championships
Third seed Sam Querrey of the United States won his opening round match against the unseeded German, Dustin Brown, in the Delray Beach International Championships on Monday.
Querrey defeated his German opponent after a tough three-set competition by 6-3, 5-7 and 6-3 to qualify for the second round of the tournament. The back-and-forth affair lasted for one hour and twenty minutes and witnessed a quality
game of pro tennis.
Brown served very well in the match and cracked 10 thudding aces to the opponent’s court. His first serve percentage was good, so was his return points winning ratio. The German had a slow start to the contest which led him down
later.
The American was phenomenal with his first serve, having an impressive percentage of 74. Querrey proved out to be a little over-ambitious while serving at times, as his 7 double-faults suggest. His overall performance was quite
satisfying.
Brown failed to cash in his opportunities at crucial points. He sacked four serve breaking opportunities in the contest and converted only three of them. The German put up an excellent show in the second set but couldn’t advantage
from the good work in the last set of the match.
Third seed Querrey had an astounding opening set. He completely blew away the German opponent by his elegant cross-court shot making. The American had an early serve break in the opener to get in to the lead. His flawless defence
ensured that he keep holding his serve throughout the set. Another break point towards the end of the set helped Querrey to register the set number one to his name at 6-3.
Momentum of the game took an abrupt change in the second set as the German started to play more aggressively. Querrey’s game downslide suddenly and a series of double-faults was observed from his side. He missed a couple of serve
breaking opportunities and hit many strokes long and wide.
Brown kept focused on his game and went on winning his serve games head-to-head with the American. One break point proved sufficient for the German and he reeled off the second set at 7-5 to level the match at one set a piece.
The decider was once again an all-American show with Querrey wining most of the rallies in the set. A tremendous power hitting from the American left Brown answerless. The German dropped his serve more than once as Querrey took
the decisive set number three by an assertive 6-3 score.
Querrey will be looking to book spot in the quarter-finals for a second consecutive week when he will be squaring off either against Igor Andreev of Russia or the American qualifier Ryan Sweeting in the second round matchup of
the tournament.
