Sam Querrey, Thiemo de Bakker move into quarterfinal – Sacramento Challenger 2011
Third seeded wildcard entrant, local Sam Querrey moved into the quarterfinal of the 2011 Natomas Men’s Professional Tennis Tournament in Sacramento, California on Thursday, 6th October after doing away with German Denis
Gremelmayr in three sets. Querrey bounced back from a set down to secure a 6-7(4), 7-6(1), 6-3 win over the German in two hours and six minutes.
Opening service in the first set, Querrey was broken by the German to trail 0-2. However, bouncing back in the fourth game, Querrey returned the favour to level the set scores to two games each. From there on the pair continued
to successfully hold their serves though they both pushed each other to breakpoints four times, unable to deliver. A toe-to-toe run forced the set into a tiebreaker. Rushing into an early 3-0 lead, the German maintained it till the end to clinch the tiebreaker
with a 7-4 win, going one up in the set score.
Down but definitely not out, Querrey bounced back in the second set as he once more forced the set into a tiebreaker. Although the German faced a breakpoint opportunity, he was able to successfully save it keeping the score on
level terms. However, the head-to-head run lost steam in the tiebreaker as Querrey destroyed his opponent. Holding the German to one point, Querrey reeled off seven straight points to clinch the tiebreaker 7-1, bringing the set score to even terms.
A set win a piece forced the match into a decider set. Riding the local support along with his form from the second, Querrey dominated the set from the start. Standing at 4-3 in the final set, Querrey converted a single breakpoint
opportunity to his advantage to lead the set 5-3 before serving out the set to clinch a 6-3 win, ensuring his survival at the event.
Hitting a whopping total of nineteen aces with zero double faults, Querrey recorded a 79 percent win on his first and a 59 percent win on his second serve to move into the quarterfinal of the event. The American now faces Belarusian
Uladzimir Ignatik in the last eight of the event.
Joining Querrey in the quarterfinal is the unseeded Dutch, Thiemo de Bakker. Surviving a mid match lapse in his second round match, de Bakker moved into the final eight with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Canadian qualifier, Pierre-Ludovic
Duclos.
In a match that lasted two hours and twenty four minutes, de Bakker hit ten aces with two double faults to win a total of 98 of 102 points and a berth in the quarterfinal of the event.
