Sam Thaiday named new Brisbane Broncos skipper - Rugby League news
Sam Thaiday will succeed Darren Lockyer as the next captain for the Brisbane Broncos in the National Rugby League (NRL) 2012 season. The announcment was made by the Broncos on August 9th. This news was a double-deal as Thaiday had just announced
an extension of stay with the Brisbane franchise until 2015.
Anthony Griffin, who coaches the Broncos, reckons the stature of Thaiday as a player who possesses the ability to lead the Broncos’ pack in a manner which is in-line with Lockyer, who has announced his retirement by the end of this season.
According to Griffin, the Brisbane outfit will tread into a new chapter under the flagship of Thaiday, as his splendid control both off and on the field is praiseworthy.
He further added that Thaiday, as a person and a professional player has matured in a short span of a year. While discussing Thaiday’s personal growth as a player, Griffin also shared that the Broncos are full of of experience that may be put to its full
potential by the younger lot within the Brisbane squad.
It was further added by the coach that the leadership skills are abundant within the seniors of the outfit that includes players such as Alex Glenn, Petero Civoniceva, Corey Parker and Justin Hodges. The support subtended by these seniors will be also help
Thaiday perform his newly appointed responsibilities in a much better way.
While speaking about his newly assigned responsibilities, Thaiday stated, "I am very proud and honoured to be staying on with the Broncos. Brisbane is my home now and I am very happy to have settled my future with this club so completely. To also be offered
the captaincy of the Broncos is a massive thing. The calibre of the people that have come before me - including my current captain Darren Lockyer - have been absolute legends of the game. To lead this team will be an amazing honour and one I will take very
seriously."
Thaiday is also honoured to take up this huge role and seems fully prepared to slide into the Captain’s shoes. When asked about this latest development, the 26-year-old stated that he was fully aware of the magnitude of responsibilities which comes with
that role and was convinced of his ability to shoulder it in the best possible manner.
Taking up this role has poured cold water on the speculations which were floating around about Thaiday’s intentions of leaving the Brisbane outfit at the end of the current NRL season. It was also confirmed by future captain, that he never had slightest
inclination towards leaving Brisbane at all.
As Thaiday will take reigns of Captaincy, he will join the legacy left behind by Lockyer, Gorden Tallis and Wally Lewis.
