Sam Tomkins denies any move to rugby union- Rugby
England and Wigan rugby league star, Sam Tomkins, clarified at a press conference on Thursday, November 24, that he has no intentions of switching allegiances to the alternate code of rugby, like his older brother, Joel Tomkins.
The Wigan full-back confirmed that he is only going to make a one-off appearance in union as a winger for Barbarians, on Saturday, November 26, where he will once again lock horns with Australia at Twickenham.
This way Tomkins will have another opportunity to test his skills against the Australians fresh from his Four Nations 30-8 defeat against Kangaroos.
The player only chose to make his debut in the alternate code of the rugby because there were no further commitments in rugby league until pre-season training session in December.
While talking to the media reporters about his future intentions, Wigan’s ace said, "This is just a one-off opportunity for me. It's not a job interview, it's not me trying to get with a union club. I'll be straight back to Wigan as soon as the game's finished
and I'm there for another three years so there's no question of that. It's just an opportunity that I felt that I really couldn't miss."
When Sam, who was also one of the nominees for the rugby league Man-of-Steel, was asked about moving to rugby union like his older brother, he snubbed all immediate possibilities of that happening. However, the player is not completely writing off the option,
because he has confirmed that for at least the next three years he will be still at Wigans. This means that the player may or may not explore his future employment possibilities in Union.
Expressing his views about it, Sam said that if he enjoys playing Saturday’s game, maybe he will think about it. He added, “But until then certainly not. I'm as raw as you can get. It's alright, you know I think there's a lot of differences, obviously with
the ruck and mauls, but I won't be getting involved in too many of those I hope.”
While talking about the similarities between League and Union games, the player is hoping for a similar ball handling experience.
