Sam Tomkins in trouble for V-sign gesture during Challenge Cup final – Rugby League news
Sam Tomkins of the Wigan Warriors was caught on camera flashing an abusive two-fingered V-sign gesture to Leeds Rhinos fans after the first try of the match was scored by Josh Charnley in their 28-18 Challenge Cup win over the Rhinos at Headingley Stadium
in Wembley.
Wigans were expecting Tomkins to bag the Lance Todd Trophy but according to the player, the final showdown of the Challenge Cup on August 27, was not his best game. Tomkins, who was under pressure from the Rhinos, was unable to perform as expected. However,
he paved the way for Jeff Lima who bagged the Lance Todd Trophy for his two tries that were scored in both halves of the game.
However, Tomkins has become the talk of the town for all the wrong reasons. He is heading towards potential disciplinary action which will be taken by Rugby Football League (RFL). RFL will look into this matter on Tuesday, August 30 and there are chances
that that the match review panel will announce its final take on Tomkins’ misconduct caught on camera.
If proved guilty of the charges, Tomkins will be called in for the disciplinary hearing ahead of the match-review panel, which will then reveal the degree of disciplinary action.
After the match Tomkins was asked about the incident during the clash but he remained silent over it and did not share his thoughts with the media.
While expressing his feelings about the Wigan’s Challenge Cup victory after sixteen years, Tomkins added, “There's that magic in the Challenge Cup, it's a bit different to everything else. It's been a goal of ours since the start of last year. We were unfortunate
last year when Leeds pipped us in the quarter-final and that hurt. We probably owed Leeds one.”
The Challenge Cup final showdown is seen by many as a source of pride, which includes Wigan’s departing coach, Michael Maguire, who could not possibly hope for a better wrap to his two-year term with the club.
