Sam Tomkins insists he is still very much a Rugby League player
While talking to the media on November 26, Sam Tomkins acknowledged that his understanding about the rugby union game has improved a lot by playing a single game for the Barbarians on November 26. However, despite his improved understanding of rugby union,
the player is happy calling himself a rugby league player.
Expressing his thoughts about his union experience, Tomkins stated, "When I came in on Tuesday I was so raw I didn't even know what the numbers for each position were. The boys were saying 'we'll play this off the 12 or the 10' and I didn't even know where
those blokes were so that was a bit of a challenge.”
He went on and talked about the differences in League and Union and said, “There are so many differences between league and union. I understand it a little bit more now. Where I am from people don't know what rugby union is and I am glad I have had the chance
to play but I am still a rugby league player.”
The player was playing his first game for union and still managed to score a late try but overall the Barbarians failed to give Wallabies stiff competition. While referring to his late try in the game, the player added that the score was a very nice way
to finish off the clash but there is no denying the fact that Barbarians failed to offer resistance to the Aussies.
Tomkins was fresh from the 30-8 defeat against Australia in the Gillette Four Nations Final which was staged in Elland Road Stadium in Leeds, last Saturday, November 19. England had completely failed to offer resistance to the series’ favourites, Australia,
which led to the large score until until the English side completely collapsed. With this win, Roos had managed to bag their sixth successive victory against England at Elland Roads, which is an achievement of its own.
Meanwhile, England was aspiring to claim the Four Nations title this year but they failed miserably in the final showdown of the series. This was the last league campaign of 2011 and in December the pre-season training for 2012 are all set to begin.
When Tomkins was asked by the Barbarians for his one-off Test appearance in the alternate code of rugby, he decided in favour of playing the game because he was not bound until the December training sessions.
