Sam Tomkins voted Super League Player of the Year by Rugby League Writers' Association
Sam Tomkins of Wigan Warriors has earned the Super League Player of the Year award which is presented by the Rugby League Writers’ Association. The award ceremony took  place on September 13.
This is the second year in a row that a Wigans’ player has been honoured in the same category. Last year, the same accolade was presented to Pat Richard.
While speaking to reporters about his latest honour, Tomkins said, "I'm honoured. It's always nice to pick up awards, although it's not something you think about all year. It's a team sport and there's another 16 players in every game doing their bit to make my job a little bit easier. A lot of it is down to the lads."
Tomkins performance in the Super League regular season has been laudable with his 26 tries scored this year. However, his brilliant performance in the match against Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup final has been significant in helping his squad win. This may have been the deciding factor in the award.
This year has been a very fruitful year for Tomkins, who has ended his Super League season on a very high note. With 26 tries scored, he has pushed Rangi Chase of Castleford Tigers out of the first place spot.
Tomkins has had a string of accomplishments which started last year. Last year, Tomkins won the Rugby League International Federation's Rookie of the Year awars. He was also a member of the Dream Team last year and once again this year.
The 22-year-old Tomkins has been playing professional rugby for Wigans since 2008. He has had a very quick rise in the Super League and has scored 308 points so far in the League. He has also been included in Englands International squad since 2009. He has given his national team 28 points through 7 tries. A highlight of his international career came when he scored four Tries against France in 2010. This equaled the previous record for most tries scored by a British player in one single match.
