Sam Torrance confirmed to receive Scottish Golf Lifetime Achievement Award – Golf News
Sam Torrance will be honoured with the prestigious Scottish Golf Lifetime Achievement Award.
The year marks 10 years since the European team won the Ryder Cup under his captaincy in 2002, and 40 years since his first professional win of the career came in Radici Open in 1972.
The 2001 Ryder Cup event was delayed because of the 9/11 attacks.
The Belfry, Brabazon Course in Wishaw, England, hosted the event in 2002, which witnessed the United States team being defeated by 15 ½ to 12 ½.
This is not the first time that Torrance, who represented European Ryder Team eight times in his career as a player, is receiving an award for his great contributions to the game of golf.
Earlier in 1996 and 2003, the Scottish professional golfer was honoured with Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, respectively.
The Lifetime Achievement Award will make him the third person in the history to receive the accolade from the Scottish Golf Union.
Paul Lawrie and Colin Montgomerie were the other two players who received the award last year.
"I am privileged to be receiving the Scottish Golf Lifetime Achievement Award,” Torrance said. "I have enjoyed a wonderful career and I would like to think I am not finished yet”.
"I love to play golf in Scotland and I love to come home to Scotland," he added.
Torrance turned professional in 1970 and registered a total of 43 victories afterwards that. 21 came on the European Tour, all time ninth highest, 11 on the European Seniors Tour and 11 other wins.
He was also part of European Ryder Cup winning teams in 1985, 1987, 1989, and 1995. In 1995, Torrance was the player who sank the winning put for his team and made his continent proud.
Torrance will be given the award in a ceremony scheduled to be held on March 23, 2012, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.
He currently works as a commentator at the BBC sports covering golf tournaments, especially on the European Tour.
