Sam Warburton says he is fit – Rugby News Update
Sam Warburton, the youngest Welsh captain to lead his side to a World Cup has declared that he is fit, and will be able to line up against Australia on June 9 for the first of a three-match test series that Wales plays against the Wallabies this summer.
He was upbeat about his body and condition, saying that he is almost ready to play rugby again, reiterating that he is feeling no pain, and the physios are extremely happy with his condition. Warburton does have to see a specialist before he can get the
all clear.
He said, "I am waiting for an appointment to see (specialist) Michael Fox in London but that is just a final check-up. The physios said they will judge it on how I feel functionally when I am training, so if I am happy with it and I can take part in contact
with no pain then happy days. We covered some contact today and I had no qualms about it."
Warburton has been an influential player for Wales since he made his debut against the United States of America at Chicago, on June 6, 2009, but the talisman has not played for the national team since the 2012 Six Nations. He injured a nerve in his shoulder
against France in the final of the tournament, and had to watch from the sidelines as his side clinched victory. He was only able to play 160 minutes out of the possible 400 at the tournament.
He said, "I would normally have to have a coach drag me off the field but with the injuries I had there was no way I could play on.”
The 23-year-old was earmarked for greatness since making his regional debut against Edinburgh in 2009, and having played a large part of the 2009-10 season for the Cardiff Blues, he shot to limelight. His strong performances earned him a regular spot in
the Wales team, and captaincy of the team at the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He has played for his country 27 times in his fledging career. The team management will be excited to have their captain back for the all important Australian tour.
