Sam Warburton to lead Wales during Australian tour – Rugby News
Sam Warburton, who was red carded during the Rugby World Cup semi-final clash against France, has been given the responsibility of leading his national side during the Australian tour, starting on December 3. Welsh coach, Warren Gatland, revealed his crew
for a test against Wallabies on November 20 and handed over the arm band to Sam Warburton after the end of his suspension. The coach expressed confidence in the young skipper and said he is expected to deliver like he did in RWC 2011.
The 23-year-old flanker was selected the captain of the side for the global show, concluded last month in New Zealand, despite having a few big guns in the team. He led the team from the front and produced excellent results by taking his side to the semi-final
stages. Wales were defeated by France and claimed fourth position in the event.
Talking about his squad and captain, Gatland told the media that with the return of some experienced players to the Welsh side, the combination looked balanced. He added that, “But it is a significant boost for us to have someone of the experience and stature
of Matthew Rees back in the squad which, in turn, means there is considerable competition in the hooker's position with both Huw Bennett and Lloyd Burns also with us.”
He also stated that, “As we have gone with the majority of our Rugby World Cup squad, we have maintained continuity by selecting Sam again as captain for this game. The fans have a chance to show the players how proud they are of them after their World Cup
performances.”
Meanwhile, veteran Shane Williams, who has represented his national side in 86 tests, will be seen for the last time in action for Wales. Moreover, Stephen Jones will be extending his international career to 105 matches during the same series.
Welsh squad for Australian series:
Forwards: Scott Andrews, Huw Bennett, Ryan Bevington, Lloyd Burns, Luke Charteris, Bradley Davies, Ian Evans, Lewis Evans, Toby Faletau, Gethin Jenkins, Adam Jones, Ryan Jones, Danny Lydiate, Matthew Rees, Justin Tipuric, Sam Warburton (capt)
Backs: Dan Biggar, Alex Cuthbert, Jonathan Davies, Leigh Halfpenny, Tavis Knoyle, George North, Rhys Priestland, Jamie Roberts, Liam Williams, Lloyd Williams, Scott Williams, Shane Williams
