Sam Warburton wants to win the series in Australia – Rugby News Update
Sam Warburton, the 23-year-old Wales' Captain and back-row, wants to win in Australia, when his country travels down under to play the Wallabies in a three-match test series.
However, the Welsh captain will be looking to take revenge from the Barbarians this Saturday, June 2, when they play each other. On his captaincy debut for Wales, they were defeated by the Barbarians and he has his eyes set on revenge.
Wales have not defeated the Wallabies on their soil since 1969, and the current captain of the Six Nations champions wants to win on their tour, which kicks-off at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, on June 9.
"It would be a disappointment if we came home not winning the Test series," Warburton told Scrum V.
"I'm not trying to put too much pressure on ourselves, but I think everyone will think of that because that's the natural competitiveness of the squad."
His focus is also to emulate the great England side of 2003 that won the World Cup, and defeated teams from the southern hemisphere. Warburton believes that even though Wales came fourth at the World Cup, it was disappointing that they were not able to defeat
a team from the southern hemisphere at the tournament. They lost to Australia for the third fourth place match.
He said, "So, like the great team of England of 2003, they went down there and beat all three of them and I think that really is what we should try and do... to get a series win is a massive target for us.”
He further added, "But hopefully that can change now.”
Warburton is considered one of the rising stars of the game, and he was the youngest Wales player ever to captain his side at a World Cup, which he did in 2011. His eye catching displays for the Cardiff Blues earned him his international debut against United
States of America at Chicago, on June 6, 2009. So far he has played 27 matches for his country.
His biggest test as captain will be on the tour of Australia and if he brings his team back as victors, his name will forever be etched in the history of Welsh rugby.
