New Zealand Cricket, on Monday, announced its 13-member squad for the one off Test against Zimbabwe to be played at McLean Park, Napier, on Thursday, January 26, 2012.
The only uncapped player in the 13-man squad is 27-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Otago-c829 all-rounder Sam Wells. Wells, who is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium pacer, has impressed the team management and selectors with his performance in the
drawn three day warm-up match against Zimbabwe, in which he scored a startling half century for New Zealand XI and picked up a wicket as well.
The New Zealand coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Geoffrey-Wright-c67883, said that Wells had been included in the squad to give it some balance. Wright said that his impressive performance in the warm up match has earned him the selectors' nod and hoped the rookie all-rounder,
if given the opportunity, would perform well for New Zealand at the international level.
"Sam is a talented all-rounder and we are confident if the opportunity arises he will perform well at international level for New Zealand," said Wright speaking to media reporters after announcing the squad. "He has impressed during
the three-day match in Gisborne with the bat and his skills with the ball will give good balance to the side."
The 27-year-old batting all-rounder from Otago made his first-class debut in 2007. To date, he has played 21 matches and averages 38.10 with the bat. His tally of 1067 first class runs includes two centuries and nine half centuries.
He was the leading run scorer for Otago in this season's Plunket Shield. Keeping faith in his abilities, the selectors gave him an opportunity to prove his mettle while playing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 XI side against the touring Zimbabweans
and the all-rounder duly capitalized on the opportunity, scoring 65 runs in the first innings and claiming one wicket as well in Zimbabwe’s only innings.
The only Test will be followed by three One Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals.
