Samantha Bennett wins Women’s 200m back-stroke gold title: Day three – Australian University Games
Monash University’s Samantha Bennett presented her skilful efforts in the back-stroke swim by earning the gold medal of Women’s 200m back-stroke on the last day of the 2011 Australian University Games. The session ended on Thursday, September 29, at Gold
Coast Aquatic Centre, Queensland.
The 20-year-old Bennett, who tried hard to get on a winning streak in numerous events at the championship, finally climbed the podium for gold medal in the back-stroke swim.
Previously, she represented her university in the events of 50m back-stroke, 100m back-stroke, 4*100m Medley Relay and 200m Individual Medley (IM), whereas, she was only able to occupy a silver medal in the 200m IM.
Bennett’s scintillating performance in the four-lap back-stroke swim allowed her to own the crown of the event. She qualified as the second fastest swimmer into the final but the 20-year-old showed her determinacy for gold crown in the final round.
She overwhelmed the efforts of her competitors by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 23.05 seconds, which placed Bennett 2.24 seconds ahead of her rivals. Her remarkable effort in the back-stroke discipline has drawn the attention of female back-stroke swimmers,
as she proved that she can be a valuable asset to Australia’s team.
Bennett’s stronger arm action played a vital role in contributing towards her victory, while her quickest leg action also provided her an edge in the final-lap.
The gold medallist was trailed by Queensland University of Technology’s Rebecca Harry, who failed to sustain her fastest qualification spot and completed her swim in second place with a timing of 2 minutes and 25.29 seconds. In the meantime, University of
Melbourne’s Emily Selig secured the victory stand by seizing bronze medal of the swim in a time of 2 minutes and 26.56 seconds.
With her exceptional skills, Bennett became the centre of attention for everyone in the arena, while her fellow swimmers also appreciated her noteworthy efforts. The meet came to an end after the completion of back-stroke event, whereas, the podium finishers
collected their accolades after the session’s completion.
