Samantha Crawford upsets Anett Kontaveit to capture the crown – US Open Girls’ Singles 2012
Local wild card recipient, Samantha Crawford, got the better of the 12th seed, Anett Kontaveit from Estonia, in straight sets at the Girls’ Singles event of US Open 2012 on Sunday. She joggled up a 7-5, 6-3 victory against the 16-year-old to grab
the title at this last of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
The 17-year-old made a sloppy start at this major hard court event. However, she stayed focused and ultimately carved out the victory in one hour and nine minutes. As a result, Crawford captured the major title and gained confidence boost.
Crawford commented after conquering the seeded Estonian:
“It was awesome, especially because it's the US Open, I grew up watching it. I think as the match went on I started serving better and kind of making more shots and playing better overall. She had started serving better, I thought, after I broke her. She
had held her serve a couple more times. That game I was just trying to hang in there and kind of see what would happened. So, I mean, there were a couple of points where I was running like all over the place, but I was just trying to get the ball back and
stay in the points."
The American nervously stepped into the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. She gifted away her opening serve to fall at 0-2. Apart from recovering in the very next game, Crawford lost her serve again in the sixth game and went 2-4 down. However,
the American not only snatched her break back in the proceeding game but got the breakthrough in the 11th game, eventually sealing the opener with a 7-5 win.
Ranked 312th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Crawford maintained her intensity in the follow-up set. She got the critical break in the opening game to take the initial lead. The American swiped her entire serves without
facing any barrier and cashed in her second break opportunity in the last game, subsequently clicking the set with a 6-3 success.
