Samantha Lee seizes Women’s 200m butterfly gold – 2013 NZ Open Championships
Samantha Lee of Capital Swim Club seized gold medal of the Women’s 200m butterfly on third day of the 2013 NZ Open Championships in Westwave Aquatic Centre, Auckland, on Tuesday, March 19.
The 20-year-old Lee demonstrated her ruthless efforts in the distant butterfly discipline as she went full rampant in the playoff for gold medal. With her gruelling pace, she remained in a permanent lead over her toughest challenger and secured the title.
With her astonishing pace, Lee remained in a lead of nearly four body lengths over her closest swimmer and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 12.58 seconds.
The champion was followed by Helena Gasson of Thames Swimming Club, who was 3.70 seconds apart and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 16.28 seconds for gold medal.
The second position holder was traced by Ali Clareburt of Capital Swimming Club, who was 0.27 seconds slower from her former finisher and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 16.55 seconds for bronze medal.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Charlotte Webby of Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club, who was nearly two and a half body length behind and settled on the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 18.13 seconds.
Similarly, Webby was traced by Lauren Coetzee of Capital Swim Club, who was 3.50 seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 21.63 seconds for fifth place.
Sixth position of the event was gained by Grace Sommerville of Ashburton Swim Team, who was 0.20 seconds behind and hit the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 21.83 seconds.
Seventh spot of the race was obtained by Melita Raravula of Northwave Swim Club, who was 0.73 seconds apart and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 22.56 seconds.
Raravula was chased by Caitlin Rennell of Jasi, who finished last in the race by posting an effort of 2 minutes and 22.71 seconds.
In addition, Lee expressed happiness over her title-claiming effort and received accolades at the victory ceremony of the tournament.
