Samantha Stosur, Venus Williams progress into the second round – AEGON International 2011
Samantha Stosur of Australia made an impact with her solid win over Bojana Jovanovski and advanced to the quarterfinal of the 2011 AEGON International, a WTA World Tour event being played here in Eastbourne, England.
The 27-year-old Stosur made a strong start to the match and pocketed a double break to soon wrap up the first set with a 6-3 score line. The second set opened on an equally favourable note for the Aussie, who broke Jovanoski's
serve in the very first game, just to be broken back immediately to love. However, Stosur kept control of her service games thereafter and grabbed hold of a winning break in the fifth game to complete the 6-3, 6-2 win in just 62 minutes of play.
Stosur concluded her clean effort with the help of a whopping eleven aces while committing a single double-fault. Not to mention, she clinched 68 percent on her service, 48 percent on return and a total of 58 of 100 in the contest.
In contrast, her adversary could not catch up with Stosur’s pace and lost the match with a huge difference of eight points on her service and a total of sixteen points in total
Stosur is seeded No.7 here in Eastbourne and is seeking her first title at the tournament. With this win, Stosur has improved her year-to-date win/loss mark to 22/13 matches and now moves on ahead to face either Russia’s Vera Zvonareva
or America’s Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.
Earlier today, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia also lost her second round match to former world number one Venus Williams 6-3, 6-2, here in Eastbourne, England.
Winner of seven Grand Slam titles, Williams was taken the distance by the Serb in the first set, but she ensured a win to move to the quarterfinals of the tournament. The American woman is playing the tournament for the first time
in thirteen years in an attempt to win her 44th career singles title.
Williams won the match by scoring majority of points on the scoreboard, as she managed to clinch a whopping eighty percent behind her service, 41 percent on her return and a total of sixty percent in the match.
The American will either face Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova or China’s Na Li in the quarterfinals.
